Why we’re here
“Kids can’t learn if they’re hungry, it’s as simple as that.” That observation, shared by a Rotarian and elementary school principal, underscores the critical need for the kind of healthy fruits and vegetables that RFH gathers for local food banks.
The story goes like this: A young girl was being extremely disruptive in her kindergarten class. In a fit of anger and frustration, she threw papers, overturned boxes and sat crying in the middle of the room. The teacher called the principle into her room to help console the little girl and to contact the girl’s parents. Once back in the principal’s office, the little girl sat quietly sobbing. The principle called the little girl’s mother, explained the situation and handed the phone to the little girl. The girl took the phone and immediately asked if her mother had gone to the food bank that morning.
The principal learned that the little girl’s family was struggling financially, and that meals at the house were few and far between.
