Donation Stories - Frozen Carrots
Rotary First Harvest recently received a donation of nearly two million pounds of IQF (Individual Quick Frozen) diced carrots packaged in 1,400 pound capacity bins. To put the size of this donation into perspective, imagine 50 full-sized tractor trailers filled to the brim with carrots! This is the type of carrot cubes found in frozen vegetable mixes at your local grocery store. This represents one of the largest one-time donations in our 20 years of service.
The carrots, which were not saleable due to age and color variations,
were still perfectly edible. RFH is currently working to distribute
the carrots throughout Washington State, the Northwest and even nationwide.
Working collaboratively with non-profit food distribution centers,
RFH can distribute this highly nutritious product to hundreds of thousands
of people in need.
Recently, a group of Seattle-area Rotarians spent a Sunday afternoon helping to repackage carrots from the large bins to roughly 2 pound bags of carrots. Those bags of carrots were then placed in cardboard cases and stacked onto pallets. By the end of the day, roughly 20,000 pounds of carrots were ready to be distributed.
The very next day -- literally within 16 hours -- those bags of carrots
were distributed to hungry men, women and children throughout Seattle
and other parts of Washington State.
Through the teamwork of Rotarians, trucking companies, our food
donors and our non-profit food distribution partners, RFH is helping create a better future for hungry people.
