Donation Stories - Fresh Carrots Over the course of the past summer, RFH staff worked with staff at a large carrot harvesting corporation in Eastern Washington to develop a process that filled cardboard bins provided by RFH with surplus field run carrots. By working with the donor to identify a simple and cost effective process, we were able to divert more than 250,000 pounds of carrots that would otherwise have been dumped or used to feed cattle. One truckload (42,500 pounds) was delivered to a Seattle non-profit food warehouse where a volunteer group from Microsoft Corporation packed them into bags and cases. Local food banks distributed the carrots within a week, and several called RFH to tell us how grateful they were to have such wholesome food available. Rotary First Harvest is continuing to work closely with the donor to further refine the process in hopes that we can continue to provide this highly nutritious product to men, women and children living in poverty.
