Harvest Against Hunger
Participating in gleaning is one concrete thing you can do to
address problems of hunger in your community.
For Volunteer Gleaners:
Attend a gleaning project or volunteer at the food bank. Get directly
involved with the fight against hunger, and have a good time too. How it works:
-
Most of our gleaning events are on an on-call basis. Growers
only have a couple days to get the surplus product out of the field or
orchard, so we don’t have much time to organize. We’ll send
you an email as soon as we learn of a gleaning opportunity, and if you
can make it, just reply.
- We can also organize large gleaning projects in advance, for those groups who need to plan ahead, and then match the group with a farm.
- Sign up here to be a volunteer, and you’ll
receive an email for both on-call and planned gleaning events in your
county.
When you RSVP for a gleaning event, we will send directions,
helpful information, and a liability waiver.
For Growers:
We know you're really busy during the
harvest season (or all the time) and want to make it easy for you
to open
your farm to gleaning.
Liability for all gleaning projects is covered by the
Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act. In addition, we ask
all volunteer gleaners to sign a liability waiver. You can
also view the latest USDA Insurance Fact Sheet on gleaning
here.
Sign up to be in our farmer network, and we'll contact you once
or twice a year to inquire about gleaning possibilities.
You will receive a receipt of donation for tax purposes, but please
consult your tax advisor regarding its application.
Other Opportunities:
We welcome volunteers in many aspects of our work.
Volunteer your skills and talents (for example - graphic design, database
programming, fundraising, transportation, etc.) Email Julie
or call 800-457-4483.
Share Your Contacts & Resources:
Do you have contacts in farming,
food processing, trucking, packaging, or food storage?
References from friends and business contacts have built the capacity
of Rotary First Harvest for more than twenty-five years. These
referrals have led to donations of apples and potatoes, as well
as the transportation of produce, for people in need. Please think about
what contacts
you
have that might be able to help Harvest Against Hunger’s efforts.
