Carnation

Hopelink provides emergency food services to five food centers in Bellevue, Kirkland/Northshore, Redmond, Shoreline and Sno-Valley. The Harvest VISTA is based at Carnation in the Snoqualmie Valley, working with a variety of small and midsize growers to expand and strengthen gleaning efforts. Additionally, the project will focus on nutrition and education projects, such as local gardening initiatives and cooking demos with food bank clients.

About the VISTA:

Lisa grew up in the Florida panhandle, where she developed an interest in cooking and nutrition while working at a natural foods co-op. She moved to Seattle to continue her studies in nutrition at Bastyr University (MS Nutrition, 2010). Lisa is passionate about hunger and the foods that fill the local food banks. Her master’s thesis investigated how local blackberries affect vascular disease in people with diabetes. Her results were positive and demonstrated that highly accessible (i.e. low-cost and locally/wildly grown) foods can be beneficial to health. She also led a cooking series at a women’s transitional housing facility in Seattle.
