Second Harvest has led the hunger-relief network in Eastern Washington since 1971. The Harvest VISTA at Second Harvest is focusing on building a Plant a Row for the Hungry program, increasing community garden participation and broadening gleaning efforts in their service area. Plant a Row, a people-helping-people initiative to assist in feeding hungry members of the community. The program saw a 70 percent increase in produce donations after his first year of service, growing from 160,000 pounds to well over 270,000 pounds. Additionally, Second Harvest are working to develop nutritional information, educational resources and recipes that are distributed to mobile food bank clients.
About the VISTA:
Born and raised in southern New Jersey, Keith is serving his second consecutive term as Harvest Coordinator for Second Harvest. Prior to his cross-country journey, Keith spent six months living on an island in Maine, serving as an Environmental Educator with the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife – also through AmeriCorps. Utilizing local farmers markets for their fresh, nutritious produce is an integral part of this vegan’s lifestyle.
