Tacoma
EFN started in 1982 and distributes food to 67 food banks, shelters and meal sites in Pierce County. The VISTA member is further developing the Pierce County Gleaning Project through a three pronged approach of neighborhood fruit tree harvest, plant a row for the hungry campaign and a farmers market rescue project. The VISTA is building on previous success to increase volunteer efforts for local gleaning projects and produce donations.
Emily grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs where she remembers growing mammoth sunflowers with her father and counting the many seeds for an elementary school science fair project. Since then she has gone on to diversify her growing and natural food experience. She graduated from Oberlin College in 2009 where she worked as a head cook and board member in student eating cooperatives. Emily moved to Tacoma to spend a year at L’Arche Farm and Gardens, growing people and growing plants alongside differently abled adults. Most recently, she spent the past growing season at a Catholic Worker Farm in Iowa, producing food for a small CSA and for donation to local food banks and shelters. Emily loves Tacoma and is excited to expand access to fresh, local food in the area.
