Farmer Generosity Continues04 Sep 2015, by Providence NEW Hunger Coalition in
In its two years of working with Providence NEW Hunger Coalition, Front Porch Farm has always been extremely supportive of Northeast Washington food banks. That generosity reached a new level on a perfect Thursday evening out in their onion patch. With the help of 17 volunteers from the NEW Gleaners and the Providence NEW Hunger Coalition Harvest Club, more than 2,300 pounds of Walla Walla onions were gathered up, clipped, boxed, and sent out to hungry families across the counties of Stevens, Ferry, and Pend Oreille.
This bounty comes on top what’s already been a very plentiful year, in spite of widespread wildfires in the region—some of which came within a few hundred yards of their farmstead. To date, Front Porch Farm has donated over 550 pounds of cucumbers along with more than 1000 pounds of summer squash towards the Hunger Coalition’s efforts to improve food security in Northeast Washington. Thanks to the farmers and growers everywhere, like Front Porch Farm, who support local food security.
